Nijolė, la huella de la existencia

Hoy es un día importante. Esta noche en la Cinemateca de Bogotá es la premier nacional del documental Nijolė, en el cual trabajé como guionista y montajista. Sin embargo, lo que inició en aquél 2016, sigue vivo todavía hoy. Antanas alguna vez dijo que él sintió el deber de hacerse "famoso" para hacer justicia a su madre. Esta película es justamente eso.

Nijolė me mostró cómo los artistas nunca mueren. El año pasado durante mi residencia en Akademie Schloss Solitude, en la ciudad de Stuttgart, proyecté el documental. Fue justo en Stuttgart, donde Nijolė estudió bellas artes. Allí llegó en plena guerra mundial, escapando de su país natal Lituania.

El ritual de proyectar el documental en ese mismo lugar, desató una serie de eventos inesperados.

Elke Aus dem Moore, directora de Solitude, supo que debía traer a Nijolė a la tierra que la vio desarrollarse como artista. Con el equipo de la Triennale, empezamos a trabajar, junto a la familia Mockus Sivickas, para traer las obras de Nijole a la trienal de escultura en pequeña escala de Triennale Fellbach, y la obra gráfica de Nijole, que incluye una serie de dibujos que realizó mientras vivía en Alemania.

Escudriñando en sus archivos, descubrimos que no sólo estudió en Stuttgart sino que vivió también en Fellbach, exactamente el mismo lugar a donde volverían sus trabajos, más de 70 años después, y donde todavía pueden ser visitados.

Nijolė falleció un mes antes del estreno mundial del documental, en el festival de documentales DOK Leipzig, (casualmente es Alemania a reconocer el genio de Nijolė otra vez). Desde entonces la película ha sido proyectada en nuestro FICCI en Cartagena, en DocsBarcelona, en BiografilmFest en Italia, y fue la película inaugural del Festival de documentales de Vilnius, capital de Lituania.

Personalmente, desde ese momento también establecí una relación profunda con Lituania, un país que, a pesar del frío, está hecho de gente muy muy cálida y amorosa. Dagnė Vildžiūnaitė, productora del documental vino a conocer a Nijole y Antanas en un almuerzo en Vilnius y materializó el sueño. Eglė Aleksandra Marija Ozolinčiūtė logró en una semana que el Museo de Arte Moderno de Vilnius presentara la obra de Nijolė "Darbai ir Reflekcijos"; la música de Lina Lapelyte, artista ganadora del león de oro de Venecia, se mezcló perfectamente con la personalidad de esta historia, y Silvija Woolf, aprendió a amar a los personajes a través del la línea de montaje.

Desde hoy la película podrá ser vista en las salas de cine de Colombia, gracias al trabajo de la productora colombiana La Olimpo, y Distrito Pacífico. El documental llega finalmente al país que acogió a Nijolė, al cual ella amó profundamente, y donde nació ese sujeto con el nombre extraño que nos recordó que la vida es sagrada.

Today is an important day. Tonight at the Cinemateca de Bogotá is the national premiere of the documentary Nijolė, in which I worked as a screenwriter and editor. However, what began in 2016 is still alive today. Antanas once said that he felt a duty to become "famous" to do justice to his mother. This movie is precisely that.

Nijolė also showed me how artists never die. Last year during my residency at Akademie Schloss Solitude, in the city of Stuttgart, I screened the documentary. It was in Stuttgart, where Nijolė studied fine arts. She arrived there in the middle of the second world war, escaping from her native country of Lithuania. The ritual of screening the documentary in that same place unleashed a series of unexpected events.

Elke Aus dem Moore, director of Solitude, knew she had to bring Nijolė to the land where she develop as an artist. With the Triennale team, we started working, together with the Mockus Sivickas family, to bring Nijole's works to the small-scale sculpture Triennale of Fellbach, and Nijole's graphic work, which includes a series of drawings that she made while living in Germany.

Digging into her archives, we discover that she not only studied in Stuttgart but also lived in Fellbach, exactly the same place where her works would return, more than 70 years later, and where they can still be visited.

Nijolė passed away a month before the world premiere of the documentary, at the DOK Leipzig documentary festival (coincidentally it is Germany to recognize Nijolė's genius again). Since then the film has been screened at FICCI in Cartagena, at DocsBarcelona, ​​at BiografilmFest in Italy, and was the opening film of the Vilnius Documentary Festival, the capital of Lithuania.

Personally, from that moment I also established a deep relationship with Lithuania, a country that, despite the cold, is made of very, very warm and loving people. Dagnė Vildžiūnaitė, producer of the documentary came to meet Nijole and Antanas at a lunch in Vilnius and the dream materialized. Eglė Aleksandra Marija Ozolinčiūtė succeeded in getting the Vilnius Museum of Modern Art to present Nijolė's work "Darbai ir Reflekcijos" in only one week; the music of Lina Lapelyte, winner of the Golden Lion of Venice, blended perfectly with the personality of this story, and Silvija Woolf learned to love the characters through the editing timeline.

Today the film can be seen in movie theatres in Colombia. The country that welcomed Nijolė, which she loved deeply, and where that guy with the strange name was born and reminded us that life is sacred.

Nijolė has not died

I am happy and honored to share with you the results of the hard work of months together with the curators of the Triennale and the Mockus Sivickas family:

Nijolė's work will be showcased at the small-scale sculpture Triennale of Fellbach (Germany), from June 4th to October 3rd 2022.

In parallel, the city gallery of Fellbach has dedicated a Solo Exhibition of Nijole's graphic work. Some of these artworks portray pieces of her life in Stuttgart and Fellbach, after WW2 when she was a student of the Fine Arts Academy of Stuttgart.

People visiting the city of Fellbach this summer will be able to get closer to Nijolė's sculpture and graphic work and watch the documentary.

This is Nijolė's first posthumous exhibition. The sculptures were her last curatorial selection.

Sivickas, Nijole

Nijolė Šivickas (Lithuania, 1925–Colombia, 2018) never died; she vibrates with her work as a single being. If you get close enough, you can see her hands shaping each one of her creations, and you can hear her sculptures reciting poems that come from the bowels of the earth, mixtures of blood and bones, of pain and hope. Her beings expand in time and space, welcoming with a warm hug to whoever visits. They defy the laws of physics via impossible shapes and volumes, and her characters shake the foundations of society with fierce humility. Šivickas’ work mixes ceramics, metals, wood and oxide, exposing her bond with the natural quality of her materials.

This selection displays different stages of her oeuvre, from figurative to abstract and installation. Beings that talk about the human condition: Señora (Lady) is a confident mature woman. Idiota (Idiot) is each one of us, clueless but calm before the mystery of existence. In Escena de Cinco (Scene of five), Šivickas becomes a film director assembling a mise-en-scène of five beings expressing their individuality within the collectivity. Pesadilla (Nightmare) enters a dark and dense dream with begging hands, dead feet, and eyes that scrutinize. Colgado (Hanged) stages a tragic death within the immensity of the unknown. From this void, we are born again with Semilla (Seed): a sacred egg that is being delicately cut by an invisible hand. And with a playful smile on her face, Šivickas makes us feel the pain of the burning iron on our skin, branding us like cows with the label: MUJER (WOMAN).

"I’m not in front of the material. The material is next to me. I look at it and it watches me. And so the dialogue begins: I am raising an object from you and you are forcing me to hold you in my hands while you also try to raise. Are we fighting? you ask. We are two beings, you are already an object, and I am within you. Look, you hurt my hand and leg. But you were carving me with a knife." And so the dialogue never ends ...

About the Speakers:

Josh Fisher: I work with emerging media forms to facilitate social change. My specific focus is on community storytelling and I collaborate with community leaders, artists, educators, writers, and students on stories of communal significance. For example, I developed an augmented reality storytelling platform for Georgia Tech. Then, as part of my research, assessed the impact of the platform through both qualitative and quantitative methods. Over the years, I have become an established public speaker and storyteller with performances, lectures, and talks on digital publishing, interactive narratives, and augmented reality design. I have had the pleasure of teaching courses on visual design, interactive storytelling, communication and culture, mobile and web design.


Maria Reyes is a Colombian researcher and screenwriter based in Italy and working as a researcher at the Institute of Educational Technologies at the National Research Council of Italy (CNR-ITD). She holds a double PhD degree in Digital Humanities from the University of Genoa (Italy) and in Communication Sciences from Universidad del Norte (Colombia). Her research focuses on interactive digital narratives, immersive technologies and distance learning processes. 

During her career, Dr. Reyes - known to her friends as Xeh -  has worked as lecturer in digital storytelling and cinema; as a screenwriter and editor for cinema; as a creator of interactive VR projects; and as a radio producer at the Latin American Association of Educational Radio (ALER). She is researcher-in-residence 2020-2021 at Schloss Solitude Akademie. Co-curator of ICIDS 2020 Art Exhibition.

Omaggio ad Antanas Mockus, il creativo e filosofo ex-sindaco di Bogotà che ha cambiato la storia politica della Colombia

Biografilm Festival dedica un omaggio ad Antanas Mockus e alla sua meravigliosa storia come innovativo sindaco di Bogotà.

Rettore dell’Università di Bogotà e due volte sindaco della città, è stato inventore di un nuovo modo di comunicare e fare politica, partendo dai più piccoli problemi ed ottenendo risultati straordinari.

Per risolvere il problema del traffico e degli incidenti stradali, distribuì ai cittadini dei cartelli con un pollice verde alzato e un pollice rosso rivolto verso il basso, da usare per segnalare i buoni e cattivi comportamenti dei loro concittadini. Assunse dei mimi ai semafori che reagivano alle abitudini scorrette di automobilisti e passanti. Girò uno spot in cui faceva la doccia chiudendo l’acqua mentre si insaponava chiedendo a tutti di fare lo stesso, come messaggio in risposta alla grave carenza d’acqua che la città affrontava.

Proibì le armi e fece diminuire violenza, criminalità e omicidi in città con iniziative molto creative; per ridurre la paura e le molestie organizzò le “Notti delle donne”, serate di coprifuoco volontario per gli uomini per permettere alle donne di uscire tranquille.

Biografilm Festival rende omaggio al politico, filosofo e matematico colombiano Antanas Mockus con la proiezione di Nijole di Sandro Bozzolo, in anteprima italiana, film sull'artista lituana Nijole Sivickas che ha ispirato l’azione artistico-politica di suo figlio Antanas Mockus, e il film Life Is Sacred di Andreas M. Dalsgaard, sui quattro anni di battaglie per la pace del gruppo guidato da Antanas Mockus che usando mimi, matite, flashmob e costumi da supereroe ha cambiato la storia politica colombiana.

Ieri, 17 Ottobre 2018 abbiamo presentato lo spettacolo dedicato all'incredibile storia dei fratelli Francesco e Vincenzo Di Domenico, migranti italiani d'inizio Novecento e pionieri del cinema in Colombia. Lo spettacolo si compone di proiezioni di materiali d'archivio selezionate dall'autore e sonorizzate dal vivo da Pier Renzo Ponzo, il tutto accompagnato da brani estratti dal volume “A raccontar la luce”, interpretati da me.

Antanas Mockus and I working on Nijole’s presentation “Works and Reflexions” at the Contemporary Art Center of Vilnius.

I am one of the 4 components of a trip to Lithuania in 2016: Nijole, Antanas, Sandro (the director), and me. Of the 4, today we are 3. We wanted to make a biographical film and we ended up making a film about the relationship between art and love, about freedom. This film, called Nijole, will become Cinema (with a capital C) in a few days: the world premiere will be at the 61st edition of the Leipzig Festival, the European documentary's temple; just a day after Herzog, in person, released his latest documentary; in the competition that highlights the next masters of the documentary. But this is nothing: the film will see the light in the country where Nijole was trained as an artist, and from which the conditions that later led her to Colombia arose. The film will be screened for the first time, only one month after his death. Those who will see this film, will see it, in its essence, next to the essence of his son Antanas (his work). Nijole yearned to make art without an object. This movie is that, it's herself, made light.

“Antanas Mockus was Mayor of Bogotá, several times Colombian presidential candidate, and voted into the senate in 2018. But this film is not about the politician, but about his 88-year-old mother, the idiosyncratic artist Nijolė Šivickas. She has consistently protected her private life from the public eye, agreeing only reluctantly to media interviews. Even her son knew almost nothing about her Lithuanian childhood. In her artistic practice, but also emotionally, she had turned her back on her homeland.

Now Nijolė has been invited to give a workshop on the occasion of a great retrospective in Vilnius. The film follows her and Antanas on this journey. It’s basically a son’s look at a mother whose independence and critical social spirit were his constant inspiration. Sandro Bozzolo and his team approach their protagonists with restraint, adapt the montage to their rhythm and focus on the rooms of their creative work, on Nijolė’s meetings with Antanas and their journey home together, which moves both deeply. The son takes his mother by the hand, as does this story of an outer and inner journey with the audience. Which events continue to shape one’s life and which had better be forgotten?”

Il Salón Olympia allo Sponz Fest 2017

Sono stata invitata da Vinicio Capossela a fare parte dello Sponz Fest, festival che si svolge a Calitri, il suo paese d'origine. Tutto è nato nel 2016 quando gli ho raccontato la storia dei fratelli Di Domenico, due irpini nati a Castelnuovo di Conza, che si sono portati in giro il cinematografo all'inizio del '900 nelle Antille, Guyana, Venezuela e finalmente Colombia, dove hanno proiettato per la prima volta il cinema e hanno aperto al pubblico il primo cinema stabile a Bogotá. Vinicio si è ricordato e ha pensato che la storia meritava essere conosciuta nella terra da dove era partita.

Francesco e Vincenzo Di Domenico hanno creato per sempre un collegamento diretto fra l'Italia e la Colombia, fra l'Irpinia e il realismo magico di García Márquez. La loro storia è raccontata anche da Sandro Bozzolo nel suo libro "A Raccontar la Luce" e nel documentario diretto da Max Chicco "Salón Olympia: I fratelli del cinema" attualmente in fase di montaggio. 

La storia è stata presentata all'Ex Cinema Rossini di Calitri, nella sezione pomeridiana denominata "Irpinia, Andata e Ritorno". Per raccontare la storia dei Di Domenico ho utilizzatto dei filmati d'epoca fatti dai fratelli Lumière, George Meliès, fratelli Pathè, Alberini e Santoni, e dei propri Di Domenico, i primi a filmare la Colombia. Il maestro Pier Renzo Ponzo ha creato degli ambienti meravigliosi per accompagnare la storia, mentre Christian Zecca ha dato voce ai racconti in prima persona di Francesco Di Domenico. Alla presentazione è venuto Michele Ianuzzelli, sindaco di Castelnuovo di Conza, chi si è portato dietro gli atti di nascita di Francesco e Vincenzo.

Immersive Learning Research Network

I'm at Coimbra, Portugal. Tomorrow I'm going to present my paper "Screenwriting Framework for an Interactive Virtual Reality Film" in the Immersive Learning Research Network 3rd International Conference. 

The conference have been very interesting, the network is strong and the focus is clear: how to use avant-garde technologies in order to improve learning. Hololens, VR, AR and gamification are just some of the technologies presented in the conference.

Nijole - Best Doc at FEST Pitching Forum

I had the opportunity to pitch the documentary project "Nijole", a movie that approaches for the first time the life and art of Nijole Sivickas, mother of Antanas Mockus, at the Pitching Forum of FEST - New Directors New Film Festival 2017, at Espinho, Portugal.

The project was selected as Best Feature Documentary Project.  The film won the post-production price at ENVY studios in London, UK.

Reflexiones sobre la narrativa interactiva en VR

En esta entrevista María Cecilia habla de los nuevos procesos de narración creativa que hay alrededor de las tecnologías de realidad virtual, nos comenta sus campos de aplicación y plantea una de las fronteras con que esta nueva forma de realidad se encontrará en un futuro próximo, uno que esta vez sí logrará sacarnos por completo de nuestro mundo.

Narrazione Interattiva in Realtà Virtuale: Vivere il film

Sono stata invitata al OpenDay del CrossmediaLab dell’Università di Bogotà Jorge Tadeo Lozano per parlare sulle diverse possibilità delle narrative che si possono sperimentare nella realtà virtuale. Se pensiamo al concetto Realtà Virtuale al di fuori del contesto tecnologico, troviamo una grossa ambiguità del termine che vuol dire qualcosa tipo: “la realtà virtuale è un evento o soggetto che è reale in effetto ma non di fatto”, quest’ambiguità gioca con quello che effettivamente succede quando utilizziamo un HMD (head mounted display) ovvero la maschera di realtà virtuale: la realtà fisica si allontana dalla realtà cognitiva, la nostra mente vive una realtà diversa a quella che vive il nostro corpo, situazione che possiamo vivere “in natura” quando dormiamo o sotto l’effetto di qualche sostanza psicodelica o anestisiante. Non in vano Google ha denominato la sua azienda per la VR “Daydream“.

Inizia quindi una sfida per i creatori di contenuti. Abbiamo un nuovo mezzo a disposizione per raccontare storie che ora sono esperienze, e cambiano le regole del gioco. Per chi proviene da un background nettamente tecnologico e abbia voglia di creare esperienze complesse oltre alle situazionali, ha bisogno di iniziare a prendere in considerazione i concetti basilari della narrativa classica, la cinematografia e il teatro, perché sono queste arti quelle che offrono gli indizi e le chiavi per iniziare a decostruire il linguaggio della Realtá Virtuale, un linguaggio che in qualche modo possiamo intuire grazie alla educazione audiovisiva che abbiamo ricevuto grazie ai film e la tv, e alla educazione interattiva che ci ha offerto l’ipertestualità negli ultimi vent’anni. Non è un mezzo strano per noi, anche se è diverso da qualsiasi altro mezzo che abbia mai creato l’umanità e che poteva solo emergere oggi con gli sviluppi tecnologici. Nelle caverne, le chiese, le tombe e i panorami, l’uomo ha cercato di creare ambienti sferici che rinchiudono la visione umana per allontanarlo dalla realtà quotidiana, ciò nonostante solo ora la nostra coscienza riesce ad essere completamente estrapolata. Chris Milk, uno dei più riconosciuti creatori per VR, dice che la realtà virtuale è l’ultimo medium, il medium definitivo, perché se negli altri medium la coscienza interpretava il medium, in VR la coscienza è il medium.

In effetti, il creatore diventa una sorta di Dio, creando una realtá dove immergerá completamente al suo recettore, da dove il fruitore può solo uscirne togliendo la maschera. Emergono quindi tante domande: “come possiamo creare esperienze attraenti che riescano a mantenere l’attenzione del fruitore?”  “come possiamo creare un senso di autonomia e libertà per il fruitore nel nostro universo narrativo?” “come possiamo dare un vero senso di realtà che permetta una vera immersione?”

Mentre l’era dell’informazione elettronica matura, l’era dell’esperienza inizia. Già nella storia dell’umanità migliaia di artisti ci hanno regalato un vasto numero di universi narrativi che possiamo riconoscere a colpo d’occhio. È ora di iniziare a pensare come portare questi universi a un mezzo che mette alla prova la nostra sensorialità e la nostra corporeità. E mentre diventiamo sempre più bravi a creare esperienze artificiali, alcune delle domande tradizionali della filosofia smettono di essere solo ipotesi. Nel momento in cui il nostro tempo trascorre in una realtà parallela diversa, nell’altrove, e anche se per un solo istante ci dimentichiamo della realtà -quella reale- cominciamo a chiederci cos’è la realtà, eppure, cos’è l’esistenza.

Nella prossima settimana svilupperemo un workshop con 12 studenti con l’obiettivo di creare due cortometraggi a 360º dove il tema centrale sarà la riconciliazione, tema molto importante in Colombia a proposito degli accordi di pace.
